MUHAMMED
![]() |
the name Muhammad has root in the Arabic
verb Hamad which means
to praise this makes sense that it means
the praise as the most popular figure of
this name has been praised extensively
for many years
that of course being the prophet
Muhammad founder of the religion of
Islam
however, he is definitely not the only
person to be graced with that given name
of Muhammad in fact it's believed that
Muhammad is the most popular name on
earth
being the name given to more people than
any other so how and why did this name
become the world's most popular
however, is it actually the most popular
name well if you look through your lists
of most popular names from countries
across the world
Muhammad doesn't pop up as the number
one name in some of the biggest
countries on our planet which you think
it would be considering is supposedly the
most popular name out there
Wei, Liam, and alexander come out as the
most popular boys names in 2018 in three
of the world's biggest nations
china the USA and Russia respectively of
course
with nations in the middle east Muhammad
does reign as the number one boy's name
so why is Muhammad considered the
world's most popular name when so many
countries it
isn't well to understand this let's look
specifically at the most popular boy's
name here in England
since 2013 the most popular boy's name
here has been Oliver however many argue
the most popular name
isn't Oliver but Mohammed so why did the
UK's national statistics office
that does not show this well it's because
in countries like England where Arabic
isn't the official language and Muhammad
is a name of Arabic origins
various spellings and transliterations
of the name are used Wikipedia lists 30
variations of the name
and here in England the three most
popular are Muhammad Mohammed and
Muhammad if we count these spelling
variations as one name they overtake
Oliver by a long shot as the most
popular boy's name here in England
however, as they are different spellings
in the national statistics office counts
them as separate names
so if we combined all the people with
spelling variations of the first name
Muhammad, it's estimated that 150 million
men have that first name which is safe
to say is a lot of Muhammad's so
why is this name so popular of course
this is due to the connotations the name
Muhammad has in the religion of Islam
as we mentioned in Muhammad is the name
of the prophet of Islam so we could
simply say that the name is so popular
due to the many Muslims naming their
sons after the prophet
however, I feel there has to be more to
it than that because while Muhammad is
the most popular name due to Islam
Islam isn't the most popular religion in
the world Islam is the second most
followed religion with 1.8 billion
followers
with Christianity being the most
followed with 2.3 billion followers if
Muhammad is so popular due to delusion
then surely the name of the prophet of
the bigger religion would be more
popular
at least that's my thought process on
the matter anyway however we can see
that Jesus doesn't even register in the
top 100 names here in the UK
while Muhammad and its variations do
so why are Muslims happy to name their
children after their prophet but
Christians don't seem to be as keen on
naming their children after theirs
I did some research into this and it
seems that too many Christians in the
English-speaking world the name Jesus
should only be reserved for christ
himself and
naming a child Jesus would be seen as
disrespectful to the messiah however
while Jesus isn't a popular name in the
English-speaking world
names that honor Jesus is Joshua is a
name that has etymological roots in the
name
Jesus and of course the name Christopher
comes from christ too
and like I said not naming your child
Jesus seems to be a thing for
English-speaking Christians
in the Spanish-speaking world however
Jesus is a much more popular thing to
give your child
however, is pronounced as Jesus while in
Christianity it seems that calling your
child Jesus is something of a no this
doesn't translate over to the world of
Islam
in fact, it seems to be the complete
opposite not only is it not frowned upon
to name your son after the prophet it
seems very much the preferred choice
I read through some articles about the
importance of the name in the Islam
world dr Justin guest of Harvard and the
London School of economics looked into
it and explained that Muslims see
Muhammad as a paragon of excellence
and many name their sons after the
prophet in hopes they will live a life
like the prophet
in another article one Muslim woman
explained that she gave her son the
the middle name of Muhammad she said i
wanted a name that would make my son
think about who our prophet was and what
it really means to be a Muslim rather
then any negative media representation
of Islam or the twisted actions of those
who claim to do things in the prophet's
name
and speaking of negative media
representation with Muhammad being the
a most popular name on the planet
much attention has been brought onto it
many sites and newspapers use this to
portray Muslims in a negative light
I would say don't judge people solely by
their name especially if it happens to
be the most popular name on our
planet Muhammad
